On April 1, 2006, a group of five amateur radio enthusiasts decided to unite to form an organization currently known as the Lawton Independent Repeater Alliance. The alliance’s general objective is to promote amateur radio communications to higher standards throughout Southwest Oklahoma. Since inception, the group has rapidly exploded in assets, including over 20 paid members, five 70cm repeaters, three 2-meter repeaters, four APRS digi-peaters, and two IRLP nodes. Many of the members of LIRA show to be very resourceful and technologically advanced. To this day, LIRA continues to further seek new plans and opportunities to enhance amateur radio in this region.
LIRA’s primary objective in amateur radio communications is severe weather chasing and disaster relief. Being that, the alliance has formed a team better known as the ‘LIRA Storm Team’. The team, coordinated by a net control, promptly provides reliable and accurate information from the Southwest Oklahoma and North Texas region to important entities such as Comanche County Emergency Management and KSWO television. This viable information is then passed on to safeguard the general public. When chasing, all chase team members run GPS trackers in their vehicles via the Automatic Position Reporting System, or APRS. This allows very quick and accurate reporting to net control. Nevertheless, LIRA reaches out to other amateur radio organizations in need of support to cooperate in any other activities one may sponsor. For instance, this could range in an endless variety of items such as bicycle races, marathons, field days, or even technical support. LIRA members are currently affiliated with both the Altus Skywarn Association and the Lawton Ft. Sill Amateur Radio Club.
Furthermore, the Lawton Independent Repeater Alliance solely operates on funds collected from member dues and with donations from the surrounding communities. The Lawton Independent Repeater Alliance is a 501(c)3 Tax Exempt organization recognized by the IRS. If you would like to donate to LIRA, one can do so by contacting our Secretary/Treasurer, or any of the charter members. If you would like to become a member of LIRA, please fill out a membership application for submittal. As always, thanks for your support! | |||||||||||
