Amateur radio continues to be the reliable backup communications providing support to lead agencies such as the Red Cross or the Salvation Army, and support local government, such as police or fire departments when those agencies primary communication systems fail. The ability to pass a government emergency response exercise may hinge on the presence or lack of presence of an amateur radio operator.
