) Members of the Lawton Independent Repeater Alliance's Storm Team actively pursue and investigate storms throughout the Southwest Oklahoma and North Texas region. Both Storm Spotters and Storm Chasers coexist under the Lawton Independent Repeater Alliance Storm Team umbrella. The LIRA Storm Team plays a critical role in providing prompt, reliable and accurate information from the Southwest Oklahoma and North Texas region to important entities such as KSWO SkyWARN 7 Weather, Comanche County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service Office in Norman, OK.
) In addition to serving as the community’s first line of defense against dangerous storms, Storm Team members provide important information to warning forecasters who must make critical warning decisions. The KSWO SkyWARN 7 Weather Team and National Weather Service Forecast Office in Norman use amateur radio as one method of communicating with chasers, spotters and emergency management organizations. The National Weather Service, in cooperation with local emergency management and amateur radio groups, has developed a network of frequencies to assist in the dissemination and collection of severe weather information. ) The Lawton Independent Repeater Alliance Storm Team, in conjunction with the Altus SKYWARN Association, act as the first line defense from severe weather through trained storm chasers and stationary spotters at strategic areas of our community. These individuals intercept and track severe storms, monitoring strength and meteorological events and radio these observations into Net Control who then passes this information on to the proper authorities.
The Lawton Independent Repeater Alliance Storm Team is made of members of the Lawton Independent Repeater Alliance. ) Storm Team members are required to run APRS at all times while in the field. This is done first of all for the Storm Team Member's SAFETY and secondly so that storm reports can be passed on with the most accurate position as possible.
